Holburn Street, Aberdeen.
Mr William J Duncan dies.
In 1971 Mr William J Duncan died in Aberdeen hospital at the age of 66, he was a former president of the Aberdeen Excise Licence Holders’ Association.
Mr Duncan had been in the Trade for more than 50 years. He was joint proprietor with his brother Cecil, of the Glentanar Bar, Holburn Street, Aberdeen, which they bought in 1954. Earlier, since 1925, they had their own licensed grocer’s shop in Crown Street.
For many years, Mr Duncan gave outstanding service to association work at both local and national levels. He was president of the Aberdeen Excise Licence Holders’ Association from 1959 to 1966. He was also active in the affairs of the Scottish Licensed Trade Veto Defence Fund.
Licence-holders from all parts of Scotland attended a memorial service in Craigiebuckler Parish Church, Aberdeen.

The Duncan brothers purchased Glentanar Bar from the Ewen family. Charles Ewen (my wife’s great grandfather) set up the bar in 1909 and he and his wife Jane ran it. The name Glentanar is from the Glentanar Estate in Aboyne that Charles managed.
Charles died in 1932 and Jane in 1945 but we are unsure who ran it through to 1954.
